Generative AI in Education: China's Innovations in Pedagogy, Governance, and Large-Scale Practice

Introduction

This special session invites submissions on the theory, design, deployment, and governance of generative AI in educational contexts, with a particular—though not exclusive—focus on innovations emerging from Chinese institutions and the broader Asian region.
In April 2026, China's Ministry of Education, together with four other national departments, issued the "人工智能+教育"行动计划 (Action Plan for "AI + Education"), mandating AI integration across all schooling stages and establishing "智能向善" (AI for good) as a national principle. In August 2026, three group standards for large educational models were released, setting technical baselines for the field. These policy milestones have created unprecedented momentum for research on GenAI in education across Chinese universities, normal colleges, and edtech laboratories.

This session seeks to capture this wave of innovation. We invite papers on the following, but not limited to:

  • Pedagogical Innovation — LLM-powered tutoring systems, automated essay evaluation, synthetic educational materials, prompt engineering for learning, and "teacher-student-AI" triadic collaboration models
  • Intelligent Agents & Personalization — adaptive learning pathways, agent-based educational applications, self-regulated learning with AI scaffolding, and knowledge tracing
  • Governance & Ethics—ethical use of GenAI by students, hallucination mitigation in EdTech, academic integrity in the GenAI era, classified governance for educational AI applications, and compliance with China's newly released educational large model standards
  • Large-Scale Practice & Data Governance — provincial/district/university-wide AI education deployments, educational data governance frameworks, privacy-preserving learning analytics, and cross-institutional studies
  • Industry-Academia Collaboration—practice-based, project-oriented AI education; industry-co-created curricula; and work-integrated learning enhanced by GenAI
